What is PACER case Locator?
PACER is a service provided by and for the United States Judiciary system and is operated by the Administrative Office of the United States Courts. The PACER Case Locator is a national locator database for PACER systems in the United States appellate, district and bankruptcy courts. Data is collected from each court and inputed into the PACER Service Center nightly. You can search the PACER Case Locator by name or social security number in the bankruptcy index, name or type of lawsuit in the civil case directory, defendant name in the criminal index, and party name in the appellate index. The information provided by the search will include the name, the court where the case is filed and the case-number or the filing date. Online access is available by signing up with the PACER Service Center.
Courts maintain their own databases with case information. There are different urls to access due the fact that PACER database systems are maintained within each court, each jurisdiction. All court services are comparable though the format and content of the information may be different.
How far back the Information goes on PACER locator?
This varies in each court system. There is a navigation option at the top of the page on the PACER Case Locator called Court Information this will display the available date ranges for the cases in each court.
Are all courts available on PACER case locator?
All courts are included in the PACER Case Locator except the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
What is the cost of using PACER?
Access is billed at $0.08 per page charge. This inlcudes both the pages you search and the pages of documents you retrieve. however it is capped at single document charge of $2.40 which is equal to 30 pages. This cap does not include name searches, reports that are not case-specific, and transcripts of federal court proceedings. Please note that if your aggregate a total is less than $10.00 in any given quarter, fees are waived for that quarter and your balance is reset to $0 for the next quarter.
